Lielonggou Fm

Period:
Permian

Age Interval:
P3 (49). Lopingian Epoch (Late Permian)

Province:
Xizang (Tibet)

Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located at Lielonggou to the northeast of the hot spring of the Quesang Temple, Duilongdeqing County, Tibet. It was named by the Comprehensive Reconnaissance Expedition under the Tibetan Geological Bureau in 1979.

Lithology and Thickness

Chert. Grey-white and light-grey medium- and thick-bedded slate with interbeds of tuff and white chert, with its top consisting of a 2 m-thick grey-brown slate, intercalated with tuff. Thickness is about 181 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Claystone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Uncertain; no base having been found. Next older unit in region is the middle Permian Luobadui Fm

Upper contact

Conformable contact with the strata of the overlying Lower Triassic Chaqupu Gr

Regional extent

Distributed in the Lhasa region. In the Nianniangla-Menba Region, Mozugongka County, Xu Xian et al. (1982) have found that above the Luobadui Fm there occurs a suite of sandy slates, intercalated with a small amount of strata consisting of limestones, with a thickness of several thousands of meters known as the Mengla Gr.

Fossils

Its upper part yields Brachiopods such as Peltichia, Transennatia, Spinomarginifera, Crenispirifer and Streptorhynchus; and Bivalves such as Guizhoupecten, Sedgwickia, etc.

Age

Its upper part is Late Permian. The lower part of the formation with a thickness of 134 m is so far lacking in fossils, so its age is now hard to be determined, and it has been for the time being designated to the Upper Permian Series.
